Major Hazardous Materials Incidents

Due to the close proximity of air, rail and interstate traffic, the possibility of hazardous materials accidents is high. To report an incident, call (301) 405-3333 or 911. Follow instructions from university and local authorities.

Chemical Spill

Immediately notify occupants and evacuate the area, if necessary.

  • If the chemical is flammable, turn off any source of ignition if safe to do so.
  • Remove any contaminated clothing and stand under a safety shower, where available.
  • Contact the police at (301) 405-3333 or 911.
  • Secure the area and wait for help.

 Radioactive Materials

  • Immediately evacuate the affected area.
  • Limit your exposure and put a barrier between you and the source.
  • Contact the police at (301) 405-3333 or 911.
  • If material is spilled on you, remove clothing and use a safety shower, where available.
  • Remain nearby for responders – do not leave the area.
  • Identify yourself to authorities when they arrive.
